Exploring Hong Kong on Two Wheels
Hong Kong may be known for its dense urban landscape, but step beyond the city limits and you will discover some of the most spectacular cycling routes in Asia. Here are our top five picks.
1. Tai Mo Shan Summit
The king of Hong Kong climbs. At 957 metres, Tai Mo Shan is the territory's highest peak, and the road to the summit is a true test of endurance. The 10km climb averages about 7% gradient with some sections hitting double digits.
Best tackled in the cooler months (October to March), the views from the top are breathtaking — on clear days you can see all the way to Shenzhen.
2. Plover Cove Cycling Path
A more relaxed option, the Plover Cove path takes you along the shores of Tolo Harbour through lush greenery and peaceful villages. The relatively flat terrain makes it perfect for a recovery ride or a social spin with friends.
3. Shek O & Big Wave Bay
The road to Shek O offers a thrilling combination of fast descents and short punchy climbs with stunning ocean views. Finish at Big Wave Bay for a well-deserved dip in the sea.
4. Sai Kung Peninsula
The rolling roads of the Sai Kung Peninsula offer some of the best cycling in Hong Kong. The route takes you through fishing villages, past volcanic rock formations, and along pristine coastlines.
5. Kam Tin to Yuen Long
A scenic rural route through the heart of the New Territories, passing traditional walled villages, fish ponds, and sprawling farmland. It is a wonderful way to experience a side of Hong Kong that most visitors never see.
